How to Buy a Ticket
- QR–ticket (1 hour 2 €). Purchase online at tallinn.pilet.ee or with the mobile app Pilet.ee. Purchase up to 10 rides onto your QR-ticket. Share them with your friends and family. First, validate your ride, then choose the number of extra rides to be purchased using the arrows, then press OK and swipe your QR-ticket again. Use the front door validator with the QR-scanner.
- E-ticket 1 hour tickets are available for money, loaded onto your Smartcard, or contactless bank card; you have to validate your ticket in public transport vehicles by swiping it at the validator.
1 hour ticket can be bought with Smardcard, with contactless bankcard or download app Pilet.ee and buy ticket by phone. If you want to use bankcard then you must using public transport front door. As you board a public transport vehicle, you will be required to validate your trip every time by swiping the card to the validator. If you see a green light, your trip has been validated.
If you want to purchase more than one ticket, use the arrows to choose the required number of additional tickets (up to 5), then push OK and then validate the purchase of extra tickets by swiping your Smartcard again in front of the validator. Only the one-hour tickets of the card holder are replaced by a day ticket, this replacement does not apply to tickets for other passengers.
This day ticket is valid until the end of a transport day. The transport day starts at 4 AM and lasts 24 hours until the next morning. - Apple Pay
Passengers that are not residents of Tallinn entitled the right of discounted travel:
University students, pensioners, passengers aged 16 and over with severe or profound disabilities, and passengers who are parents of 3 or more children
How to purchase a ticket with a contactless bank card
You can use all Mastercard, Maestro, Visa and Visa Electron bank cards with contactless interfaces in public transport. You can check whether the card has a contactless interface by looking for the relevant logo on the card.The logo of contactless payment
Contactless bank card can be used in all public transport where the validator includes the logo of contactless payment. The card owner must ensure that the validator has the logo of their bank card. As a rule, such a validator is by the front door of the vehicle. A contactless bank card will not work in other validators – not for buying a ticket or for validating an existing one.

You can only use a contactless bank card to buy a 1-hour Tallinn ticket from the public transport validator, discount tickets are not available. Hour tickets are recalculated into day tickets the same way as with buying a ticket with the Ühiskaart – upon buying three or more hour tickets over a day, hour tickets are automatically replaced with one day ticket.
Travelling with smartcard (Ühiskaart)
- Travel smartcards can be purchased from various points of sale. The money can be loaded on to the smartcard at points of sale, with app Pilet.ee and online.
- In order to get a discount, personalise your Smartcard. It can be done for 1 € at a point of sale or for free at tallinn.pilet.ee/personalise. If your data were listed in the Estonian Education Information System and Estonian National Social Insurance Board Information System databases, the data would be automatically loaded onto the card. In case the document that certify the right to discounted travel is only on paper, the salesman should be asked to issue a discounted card at a point of sale when personalising it or, on Internet, tick a form in the box: "olen sooduspiletiga sõitja ja tõendan sõidusoodustuse saamise õigust soodustust tõendava dokumendiga" ("I am entitled the right to free travel and certify the right to free travel with a relevant document").
- Load money onto the Smartcard or buy an e-ticket. It can be done at a point of sale, with the app pilet.ee, or online.
- Validate your journey with the Smartcard immediately after entering the public transport vehicle.
Free public transport
As of 2013, all residents of Tallinn, school students and passengers aged 65 years and over (registered resident of Estonia) are entitled the right of free travel in Tallinn public transport. In order to travel free of charge, you need to do as follows:
Residents of Tallinn:
- Purchase a Smartcard (in Estonian) for the price of 2 €. The cards can be purchased in various points of sale.
- Personalise the card for 1 € at the point of sale or for free at tallinn.pilet.ee/personalise.
- Validate your journey with the Smartcard immediately after entering the public transport vehicle.
If a person has personalised his Smartcard and, after that, would registered him as a resident of Tallinn in the Public Register, the person would need to personalise their Public Transport Card again. Otherwise, the validator would indicate the red light.
Students listed in the Estonian Education Information System e-database (studying in Estonian school):
- Purchase a Smartcard for the price of 2 €. The Public Transport Card can be replaced by another contact-free card (e.g., a student card) meeting the standard supporting RFID technology.
- Personalise the card, it could be done for 1 € in the point of sale or for free at tallinn.pilet.ee/personalise
- Validate your journey with the Public Transport Card immediately after entering the public transport vehicle.
Smartcard is not required from:
- Children of pre-school age,
- Passengers travelling with children below the age of 3,
- Children with disabilities,
- Passengers aged 19 and over with profound disabilities,
- Individual accompanying passengers with severe or profound visual disabilities,
- Children without parental care,
- Children residing in a social welfare institution,
- Passengers who contributed to clean-up operations at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant,
- Passengers classified as or equated to victims of repression.

Passengers who are entitled to the discounted travel indicated in the Public Transport Act are not obliged to validate their journeys, but may still do so.
Passengers aged 65 years and over (registered resident of Estonia):
- Carry along a proof of identity.
- Upon wish, you would get a Smartcard for free from any post office of Omniva in Tallinn. Validation is not obligatory, but recommended.
Priced public transport

You can personalise your Smartcard, but it is not mandatory. In case of a loss of a personalised card, it is possible to transfer the money or the ticket to a new card, whereas in case of a non-personalised card you would lose the money or the ticket loaded onto the card.
Only full-price tickets are sold to non-personalised cards. Personalised card enables make use of any discounts to which they are entitled.
