During the last two weekends of October, residents of Tallinn can once again give away hazardous waste free of charge. On October 23, hazardous waste are collected in Kesklinn and Lasnamäe, on October 24 in Kristiine and Põhja-Tallin, on October 30 in Pirita and Mustamäe, and on October 31 in Haabersti and Nõmme.

"In terms of individual consumption habits, circular economy is an important aspect to achieving a greener and cleaner living environment. As part of that, Tallinn once again accepts hazardous waste free of charge from households, and it is great to see that this opportunity is being actively used,” said City Enterprise Director Mart Luik. "In 2019, 51.1 tons of hazardous waste were collected and transported in Tallinn. In 2020, the respective amount was 86.1 tons. This year, already 51.3 tons of hazardous waste has been collected so far. I call on everyone to take this opportunity so that hazardous waste would not end up in municipal waste or, worse, in nature, but gets recycled and sent back to circulation as materials.”

The following types of hazardous waste are accepted from households at collection points this autumn: packaging containing and contaminated with hazardous substances; accumulators and batteries (including lead-acid batteries); expired pharmaceuticals; leftover paints, varnishes and solvents; various oils, greases and lubricants; absorbents, filter materials, contaminated rags and protective clothing; oil filters and antifreeze residues; infectious sharp waste (e.g. old syringes, etc.); horticultural chemicals, fertilizer and pesticide residues; household acids, alkalis, photographic and other chemicals; detergents containing hazardous substances; wastes containing mercury (e.g. dated thermometers, fluorescent lamps and energy saving bulbs); old electronic equipment.

The collected hazardous waste is handled by Epler & Lorenz Ltd. The timetable and scheduled stops of the collection campaign can be found at /jaatmed or the online map at http://arcg.is/0munie.

There are two permanent hazardous waste collection points at Wismari tn 13 and Väike-Rannavärav 6, which are open on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 am to 3 pm. Hazardous waste can also be taken to waste collection terminals in Pärnamäe, Rahumäe, Pääsküla and Paljassaare.
